COP29 - ASEAN's path to net zero

COP29 discussions are expected to address funding for developing nations, with many ASEAN countries likely to benefit. This article explores the critical role of ASEAN countries in the global energy transition, given their significant populations and energy demands. While many of these nations have traditionally depended on fossil fuels, there is strong regional commitment to achieving carbon neutrality in the coming decades. With abundant natural resources and favourable climates, ASEAN countries are well-positioned to expand their renewable energy capacities.

In this article, we consider what progress has been made so far by these major ASEAN economies in areas such as use of hydrogen, sustainable aviation fuel, biofuels, and implementing carbon capture and storage, as well as the legal and regulatory tools being used to support their Paris Agreement obligations. The insights presented reinforce ASEAN countries’ dedication to climate goals and highlight their potential to contribute meaningfully to a just and sustainable energy transition.
